Lékaři a vědci z University of Maryland School of Medicine úspěšně transplantovali srdce geneticky upraveného prasete (GEP) dospělému pacientovi v konečném stádiu srdeční choroby.
Je to poprvé, co geneticky upravené zvíře srdce has functioned like a human srdce without immediate rejection by the body.
Xenotransplants (i.e., organ transplant from animal to human) were first tried in the 1980s, but were largely abandoned due to the immune system’s rejection of the foreign srdce however pig srdce ventily byly úspěšně použity pro nahrazení ventilů u lidí.
In this case, the donor prase had been genetically modified to avoid rejection. A total of ten gene edits were made in the donor pig – three genes responsible for rapid rejection of prase organs by human were deleted, six human genes responsible for immune acceptance of the pig srdce were inserted in the genome of the donor pig and one additional gene in the pig responsible for excessive growth of the srdce tissue was removed.
